Aromatherapy is an ancient science involving the use of essential plant oils as a healing tool. The history of aromatic plants used in medicine dates back 60, 000 years.
Essential oils are derived from plants, including flowers, roots, bark, leaves, needles and pines. Essential oils have chemical constituents, or properties, that can be used in the treatment of key issues. The wound healing properties of essential oils such as lavender, are undisputed.
In some cases, essential oils are now being effectively used in nursing homes and hospitals for wound care and scarring. Some essential oils also have significant analgesic and disinfectant properties and are used to reduce pain and minimise the risk of infection.
Essential oils are absorbed into the body in 2 ways:- (1) through the pores of the skin, and (2) by inhalation through the olfactory system through the nose.
Aromatherapy is particularly effective in the treatment of stress and related symptoms, such as insomnia, headaches, digestive issues, fatigue, low immunity and muscular aches and pains.
